Cannes Contenders: UK
Nate Woodhead, Deputy ECD at Virtue London, goes flipping crazy for B&Q, and sheds some light on why one of Samsung's campaigns is so good, as he picks his Cannes Contenders.
B&Q Flip
There are so many emotions tied up with our homes and the life that happens there, and since the pandemic many of us are no strangers to feeling like our world has been tipped upside down. This 90-second film captures that in a beautifully poetic way. Oscar Hudson is an excellent director, his work is always ambitious and beautifully stylised. The craft and scale of production - a full rotating house and trained mountain climber at the heart of the ad - deliver a fresh message for B&Q with ease and elegance.

Samsung Night Mode
This campaign has all my favourite bits - great casting, a credible partnership and best in class creative partners. Mother has managed to pull off a brilliant ad that is as entertaining as it is effective. Making the dark feel exciting seems a bit of a stretch but put Charli XCX, Charles Jeffrey, The British Fashion Council and a whole load of mysterious creatures through Matilda Finn’s lens and you’ve got an incredible dream-world that lights up the night.

The V&A Creativity. It’s What Makes Us Human
The V&A is, in my opinion, one of the most impressive museums in the world. Politics aside, the collection there is a vital source of craft and global creative heritage. To many, the South Kensington flagship is viewed as being out of touch, but this film is a beautifully crafted contemporary view of the magic that lives inside the museum and acts as a reminder of the creative power the V&A can deliver.

Magnum Classics Can Be Remixed
Since Magnum got everyone's attention with Iris Apfel back in 2019 they’ve continued to embrace a playful world of colour with cultural relevance. Their latest campaign is no exception. Created to bring ‘Classics Remixed’ to life, the partnership between Gou and Minogue on pop hit Can’t Get You Out of My Head is the bright dose of summary dancing we all need.

LadBible x Refuge She is Someone
This is an important piece of work that demonstrates the true power of modern youth media platforms and is a landmark moment in the maturing of LadBible. A smart and simple social campaign that brought domestic violence charity Refuge, and vital messaging about female safety, to a hard-to-reach audience at a time when it was needed most. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.
