Cannes Contenders: The UK
From a cartoon dog bringing hope to refugees to a more futuristically animated incarnation of a band, Charlie Gatsky, Chief Production Officer at Uncommon Creative Studios, highlights some of the work she thinks could win big on the Croisette.
Apple The Greatest
If there was ever a category for a ‘film that you just can’t help but love’, it would most almost certainly be won by this phenomenal piece of work from Apple. I defy anyone not to feel joyous after watching it. Not only can we advertising junkies eulogise about how brilliantly the product demos weave seamlessly and elegantly through each vignette, but us ‘crafties’ can only marvel at the levels of perfection poured into this piece. But, ultimately, this film is an ode to the art of the director. I know that Kim [Gehrig] will protest, but it is her approach to filmmaking that affords such genuinely authentic performances from her talent. Her love for people and humanity shine through and it’s why this spot connects so deeply. At a time tech can seem scary, she has shown us the positive force and wonder of advancement.

Gorillaz Immersive live performance
Totally fitting that, from the band that literally reinvented what a band could be, comes the next level iteration of what live immersive experiences could - and should - be in the future. I remember back in 2002 watching the 3D Brit Awards holograms perform with suitable jaw dropping awe, but this new, two-city takeover, featuring larger than life band members Murdoc, 2D, Noodle and Russel, utilising real time animation and Google’s Geospatial API, has taken things to a whole new level. It’s audacious. It’s epic. It’s everything you’d expect from a brand that has long derived its success from harnessing creativity to push new boundaries.

Embracing tech for purpose, we at UCS have utilised the midjourney generative AI software to imagine a world 20 years from now to demonstrate the dramatic effects of global warming. Creating 20 pieces of art, and exhibiting at 180 The Strand, we selected scenes of Britain and married them with influences from the British Romanticism to reimagine how our world would look in two outcomes: with action and non-action. Additionally housed on its own digital gallery web experience, this project I am proud to say was entirely made at UCS.
Breast Cancer Now The Chat
I love a first, and I love one that really showcases that unlikely channels can play host to well scripted and executed storytelling. That’s what this Whatsapp drama starring Rakie Ayola, Indira Varma, Claudie Blakley and Kate Ashfield has has achieved for the charity Breast Cancer Now. The brief was to help encourage more open and honest conversations around breast cancer and this real time drama playing out over six weeks has struck the right balance in treating a very serious topic in a medium that feels genuinely fitting and engaging. Great work from Mary Sue Mason, a director who has embraced this challenge and delivered such hard hitting performances.

Hey Duggie The Welcome Badge
Sheer genius. This is such an inspired piece of programming. In the midst of devastation and families being pulled apart by the destruction of the war in Ukraine this piece of work helps bring some comfort to those families arriving in the UK to seek safety. Using characters from both countries' most beloved pre-school programmes - having them meet, greet and sing together - offered a genuinely thoughtful and hopeful message to our friends of new.
