Cabin Edit warmly welcome editor Ben Canny into the fold. Known for his perfectly measured comedic timing, performance-led storytelling and an instinctive and musical approach to his craft.
Based in London, Canny joins Cabin’s roster bringing with him a body of creative and iconic work with loyal directors including Mathias & Mathais; The Pelorian Brothers Jakob Marky and Filip Nilsson. Including films for Ikea, Samsung, Nike, Sandy Hook and Kondomeriet.
His lifelong love of storytelling compelled him to leave his native Canada for London in 2003 where he enrolled at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama to study acting. He graduated with representation from a top agent but quickly realised that as much as he loved the craft, the precarious life of an actor was not for him.
It was a formative moment in his career at Flynn (a destination production company of the noughties that launched some important careers including Sam Brown, Scott Lyon and Paul Gore), that led Canny to the edit suite, closing the door on acting. It was here that he had the revelation that in fact editing was, in his words, “the machinery of storytelling.”
Canny‘s measured editing style naturally prioritises performance and comedic beats with an internal sense of rhythm that shapes every decision, even when the soundtrack drops away.
In conversation, Canny describes his creative “happy place” as work that isn’t afraid to be a little strange, “comedy that trusts the audience, leans into the unexpected and finds entertainment in the edges.” It’s this sensibility that has helped build longstanding collaborations with directors across European and international markets, and he’s hit the ground running with Cabin.
“I want to be part of a place that is fuelled by the most creative side of editing within the commercial industry,” says Canny. “Cabin feels like the right home where I can do the kind of work I love, crafted, performance-led storytelling”
Kayt Hall MD of Cabin Europe, “We’re thrilled that Ben has joined us at Cabin. We love that he’s unafraid to be a little strange. Coupled with his natural instinct for performance and narrative, that spirit reflects the kind of creative risk-taking we champion. We want editors to feel confident bringing their personality and innovative ideas to their work. Needless to say, we’re excited to be part of Ben’s next chapter and to have him join us in ours.”
