The British Arrows 2020 took place last night, one year after its originally scheduled date, and with a live broadcast from west London instead of a live event from Grosvenor House.

The event encompassed a Covid-secure shoot attended by a small handful of the night's winners, as well as representatives from sponsors of the British Arrows, and was hosted by comedian, actor and director Richard Ayoade. It was broadcast live to over 1,100 people and celebrated winners across 25 Arrows and 21 Craft categories.

Commercial of the Year was won by Bounce, made for Apple AirPods by TBWA/Media Arts Lab and directed by Oscar Hudson of Pulse Films. Agency of the Year was awarded to AMV BBDO, and Production Company of the Year was awarded to Pulse Films.

“What a journey,” said Clare Donald, Chief Production Officer at Publicis Groupe UK and Co-Chairwoman of the Arrows, alongside Jani Guest, Managing Director of Independent Films. “This has come together incredibly quickly because the decision to move to a virtual event was probably only taken about eight weeks ago, and we wouldn’t be where we are without the incredible work of Lisa [Lavender, British Arrows Operations Director] and [event production company] TBI. We’re thrilled that it’s come together so well, and we had more entertainment tonight that we would normally have at the physical event. The fact that so much of it was completely live was terrifying, but it lends something to the evening.”

The decision to move to a virtual event was probably only taken about eight weeks ago.

Asked how it’s been chairing such an important part of the advertising calendar in such challenging times, Guest said; “Clare and I are pretty calm in a crisis and I think, for everyone, the pandemic was about ‘how do you respond?’ and luckily the British Arrows team as a whole has been very good at responding.”

“When we finally did have to give up on a physical event,” said Donald, “we just decided to do something even better.”

"We hope to see everyone back at The Grosvenor House in March 2022 for another triumphant night,” concluded Guest, "but it was about putting on the very best virtual show that we could for the advertising community.”

Job done.
