Give your average birthday clown a stretchy balloon, and they can probably conjure up a dog, a giraffe or, if they're feeling clever, a flower... but an army of unique characters cribbed from a popular mobile videogame is likely to be beyond their bending powers.
Thankfully, for balloon art collective Airigami, it's not an issue, as is proved in this remarkable promo for Clash Royale from BLINKINK and Uncommon Creative Studio.
Drafted in by director Sam Gainsborough to realise the staggering challenge of wrangling 10,000+ real twisted balloons, the result is a joyful latex opus that transforms the game’s characters into an uncanny, air-filled battleground, where tension builds not through dialogue but through the simple threat of pressure and release.
With a climax that sees balloon explosions captured at 1,000 frames per second, fragments tearing through the air like elastic shrapnel, and playful genre nods baked into its filmmaking - from horror-leaning close-ups to shifting scales of puppet - the end result is a tactile, inventive spectacle that balances absurdity with squeaky cinematic craft.
