Taking a question that many of us has pondered in our time and running it to a truly absurd conclusion, Bailey Tom Bailey's The History Of Nipples is a oddly-paced, enjoyably offbeat charme.
The 10-minute short follows a wonderfully gormless Joseph Macnab as Ron, a man who can't shift the feeling that his troublesome teats have no real use, and draws in a slice of history, a sliver of existential wonderings and a chunk of squirm-worthy gore.
"The idea came from an exhibit at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin," explains Bailey, "which described a bizarre Celtic fertility ritual that involved sucking on a King's nipples and the repercussions when the ritual failed. What fascinated me beyond the absurdity was how it contrasted with our modern relationship to our bodies, the physical world and the meaning we place on them.".
Not afraid to have our hapless hero spend the majority of the film in a state of confusion - less navel-gazing, more papilla-pondering - and providing pause for thought alongside the laughs, this fun film is udderly entertaining.
