With flashes of the supernatural, moving shadows, and glass shattering without any physical reason, Hope Beats Hate makes full use of horror tropes.
It seems innocuous; texts popping up, notifications, even newsreels running stories. But all this media, all these moments, create an unfiltered feedback loop for the people on the receiving end of the digital barrage. It feels overwhelming, and in the real world, shadows start moving unnaturally, the lights go down, everything feels that much more sinister as people wait, anxiously, to see what will come on their feed next.
Directed by Matilda Finn of Stink Film, Hope Beats Hate has one moment of relief at the end of the piece; a bystander asking if everything is alright with one of the digital abuse victims. The full campaign was created by Saatchi & Saatchi and includes social media content, TV, OOH, and influencer outreach.
