Ogilvy Brazil’s brilliantly simple ad uses a split-screen to reveal the life of Safira, as she travels from an infant boy to a young woman. The first 20 years of her life feature her various milestones, achievements and differing styles, plus, of course, the profound change of her gender shift.

Meanwhile, the indestructible plastic straw embedded into a coral reef remains the same.

Directed by Alexandre Lucas and Jan Monczka, through Modernista Creative Producers, the throught-provoking film uses photos from Safira's personal archive. While casting for the spot, Ogilvy deliberately looked for people with many photos from various stages of their life, from childhood to adulthood.

A continuation of Nestlé's sustainability initiative Joga Junto (Playing Together), the ad highlights the company’s commitment to reducing plastic waste by switching to 100 per cent paper straws in its drink cartons. It ends with the simple tagline – 'if the straw doesn’t change, we change the straw'.
