Written and directed by Ross Allen, and produced by Mack Stannard, the film Heartbeat of the Nation, starts off with those obligatory empty vistas of a de-peopled coronaworld, set to the electronic beep of an ECG machine.
Cleverly, though the soundtrack’s rhythm changes, the beeps turn to rhythmic clapping as people appear on balconies and through windows to clap medical staff in an emotional homage to those who are keeping the world ticking over.
The film promotes CanadaHelps COVID-19 Healthcare & Hospital Fund. Gore Mutual is matching donated funds up to two million dollars.
It was created thanks to 24 filmmakers from across Canada donating their time and talent. Sixteen cinematographers from around the country filmed their empty cities and Ross Allen communicated with crews from concept to post-production, through video conferencing.
