On My Radar: Fenton Bailey
The Graft photographer/director is inspired by Instagram for Polaroids, swears by YouTube tutorials & credits his shutterbug dad for helping him get a foot in the door.
What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?
I guess the only one that has stuck with me recently is Gucci's spring/summer 2018 campaign with Ignasi Monreal's illustrations. It doesn’t always have to be what you expect.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
YouTube. It's a great source of 'how to' videos. You can learn how to do anything from your computer.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
Sola 4 LED spotlight. Not very exciting, however it is a good light.
Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?
None, if I can help it. My favourite social media photo-sharing service is Polanoid. It’s basically Instagram, but only pictures taken on instant film are allowed.
What’s your favourite app on your phone and why?
Google Maps.
What’s your favourite TV show and why?
Quantum Leap. If you have to ask why, you haven’t seen it.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
There are so many, it's hard to choose one. But I do think you should see one of the 1000 films to see before you die.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
In bed.
What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
Instagram.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
More power to the creatives. It's too corporate.
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
Probably the people I’ve worked for. David Bailey [Bailey's father] as he gave me my first job in the industry. Then I worked with photographer Miko Lim in Tokyo.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I used to have a crush on Brandine from The Simpsons.
