On My Radar: Luke Morrison
The recently appointed head of colour at Electric Theatre Collective is recently back from the US and is re-immersing himself in UK culture - and geography.
What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?
The Nike Londoner campaign really blew me away. It’s one of those jobs that you have to take your hat off to and you wish you were a part of.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
I'm on websites less and less these days, but If I have time usually I'll have perusal of Promo News and then Hypbeast. Film Grab is a site I use a lot for references when grading.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
Having just moved back from the US I’ve had to purchase quite a bit fortunately... and unfortunately.
What’s your favoured social media platform?
I’m a pretty visual person so Instagram was right up my street when it launched. I get a lot of inspiration from photography and fashion photography so its a great platform for finding new and great photographers.
What’s your favourite app on your phone?
Ha, City Mapper is top at the moment as I’ve totally forgotten how to get around London, so that’s been pretty invaluable.
What’s your favourite TV show and why?
People Just Do Nothing, all day. It’s so on point, it’s been really great to see how its progressed from a web series to a massive BBC show. Chef's Table is another show I'm, really into. From its production to the inspirational chefs they feature, I'm always amazed how it can start out being about food and progress into a deeper philosophy on life.
What film do you think everyone should have seen and why?
Suspiria (1977 version) is one I always recommend. I love the use of lighting and the soundtrack is brilliant. I was first put onto it by Ian Pons Jewell when he referenced it for a promo we did years ago, if you haven't seen it it's a must.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
Having been out of the UK for the past five years, I’ve been doing a lot of travelling around since being back. It's amazing to be back with fresh eye's and perspective. I was in Viking Bay the other day and was inspired by those classic seaside textures of brightly painted and weathered wood, from beach huts to little fishing boats. I'm constantly looking to add textures in my photography and within my grades.
What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
Theres been a lot of change and that's something I've always fed on and loved about the industry. From analogue to digital, from shrinking budgets, expansion of platforms and the accessibility of colour grading, I just view change as constant and an opportunity.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
Diversity within the industry is getting a huge push and it's something I think is vital. I'd love to see the industry get to a place that is a diverse as our societies.
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
I've been most influenced by my fellow colourist's and team members I've worked with throughout the years. My good friend and fellow colourist Houmam [below] has been a constant inspiration and force to keep pushing what I'm doing.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know.
I have a habit when I find a track I like, of playing it over and over. I think I've played SZA Broken Clocks about four times a day ever since it came out.
