RSA and Black Dog director Casper Balslev has previously helmed promos for the likes of alt-J [below], MØ, Marina And The Diamonds [bottom] and Seinabo Sey.

What's the best promo you’ve seen recently and why?

I really liked that new live video for Haim [Right Now], Paul Thomas Anderson directed. I saw it three times in a row. It just captured the band and the music perfectly.

What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?

Michael Jackson Thriller is the first promo I remember seeing.

And what’s your all-time favourite music video?

Beastie Boys; Sabotage.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspirational?

I’m a huge Stanley Kubrick fan. Always go back to his stuff to find inspiration or seek some energy.

What are you listening to at the moment?

Last song played on my phone is Ennio Moricone Man with the Harmonica.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

My iPhone. The camera in it. I have a background from documentary photography, so the camera I have in my pocket is my favourite camera.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

I would love to do a hip-hop video. I also like Lana Del Rey. Lots of drama to her music as well character I find attractive.

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?

There are more great narratives now. It has become a more democratic media. There is a lot of quality being produced, but also a lot of quantity. The average performance video is disappearing a bit.

Marina and The Diamonds: Primadonna (dir. Casper Balslev)

Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?

In good shape. I think and hope we will see even more narrative driven content.
