What’s the best promo you’ve seen recently and why?
It would have to be Tame Impala's video for The Less I Know the Better by Canada.
Canada's videos are always crazily enjoyable, but the art direction and craft involved with making this video really raised the bar.
To come up with an idea as weird and wonderful as this is one thing, but to throw animation, VFX, and production design as complex as this into one video and yet it feels completely cohesive shows their skill.
What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?
That’s tough, but probably Radiohead’s video for No Surprises. It's such a strikingly emotive video, but so simple in concept. I remember seeing this and thinking 'wow!'. Thom really put himself through it for the sake of the art of the music video. I'm still awed by videos that Radiohead continually make.
And what’s your all-time favourite music video?
That's almost impossible to single them out to just one, I like so many for so many different reasons. One of the more obscure videos I love is Clark Black Stone directed by the Vikings. It's so beautiful, simple, creepy and well executed, and works so well with the track. I also adore Nicolas Godin's Widerstehe Doch der Sünde by the Sacred Egg, that was definitely my favourite video of last year.
What other directors/artists do you look to for inspirational?
Tyler the Creator always comes back with something creatively brilliant and fresh. An artist that should continue to keep directing his own videos...
What are you listening to at the moment?
I'm loving BadBadNotGood's new album IV. Pretty much have that on repeat. Also Avalanches new album is a bit addictive.
What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
Snapchat, I can't remember life before communicating as a Bumble bee?
What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
I've been lucky enough to work with my some of my favourite bands/artists/directors over the last few years. I think working with any artist that is prepared to take risks with their videos and to constantly evolve their style is always the dream. Flying Lotus has a good track record with making stunning videos so I guess he'd probably be top of the list.
Sonically, Sigur Ros make some of my favourite music and they've also made some great videos, so they'd be on there too
How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?
I don't know if lucky is the word to use, but I wasn't around in the good old days of the big budget music videos so I don't think I can say I've seen the budgets fall massively (they've always been small).
However although budgets are smaller, access to new technologies has become easier. Everyone has the opportunity to make videos now, and that definitely shows with the amount of videos we see posted daily. It makes that quest to find the next great director even harder!
Michael & Janet Jackson: Scream - The most expensive music video made costing $10,870,714 (Inflation adjusted)
Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?
I hope the music industry moves to include video streams in to the official chart which will make them more of an appealing asset to some labels and hopefully put a bit more money back in the pot for the smaller and mid-level artists.
It would be good to finally see a really great virtual reality video that uses the medium to its full capacity, as they've only skimmed the surface so far.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I'm obsessed with sharks; diving with them and watching documentaries about them.
