South African director Kyle Lewis talks his favourite promos and wanting to work with Kylie Minogue.
What’s the best promo you’ve seen recently and why?
Gasaffelstein Pursuit. How it is shot and executed is masterful. I’m also in love with its symmetry.
What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?
I remember being blown away by the Michael Jackson/ Janet Jackson video Scream. It inspired me to want to make music videos. It’s one of those that if it were released today it would still be well received.
And what’s your all-time favourite music video?
Woodkid Golden Age. Breathtaking.
What other directors/artists do you look to for inspirational?
I’m a big fan of Director X but I have recently been introduced to Chris Milk’s work, which is cutting-edge.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I have the album Family Values by South African artist Riky Rick on repeat all day.
What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
I’m not a tech guy but I can’t go anywhere without my laptop.
What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
I like to work with any new artist. I love being inspired by new sounds and creations. But I would LOVE to work with Kylie Minogue! I have told myself I would do a video for her when I was like 12 years old and I will one day realise that dream :p
How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?
It has changed massively. There is so much opportunity now for young creatives to showcase what they can do.
Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?
In the next five years I see the filmmakers who make videos getting more recognition and budgets. Music videos become the mouthpiece of a generation and can garner the most change and support. They are unafraid statements that are uncensored and rebellious.
And I see in the next five years brands will realise this, as they already have come so far.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I’m very shy.
