Cannes Radar: Dave Buonaguidi
CP+B London's CCO ponders the creative talent drain while steering clear of crustaceans.
What work do you expect to win big in Cannes this year?
I have no idea to be honest. Domino's, I hope. This is only the second time I've ever been and I don't really pay too much attention to other people's work, so I don't really know.
What app will you be using on your phone during festival week?
Sky Sports news and Sky News.
What’s your social platform of choice for festival news and updates?
Probably Twitter.
What device (s) did you travel to the festival with and why?
Smartphone. That's all.
What do you think will be the hot topic of the week this year?
Probably the usual hot topics: the talent drain, diversity, and remuneration, all the stuff we've been talking about for ages and don't seem to be able to address.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
I was asleep a couple of days ago. I think about stuff a lot and as I'm falling asleep I often keep thinking about the thing that is most pressing, every know and then an idea or solution will hit me when I'm asleep, so I keep a pen and paper next to the bed.
What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
The total lack of innovation and inspiration. This has led to the talent drain, and this has led to the nose dive in the quality of client relationship and the work.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
There's a couple of people I'd love to smack in the mouth! But that sort of behaviour is frowned upon sadly. So I would make it more entrepreneurial and innovative.
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
The Sex Pistols. They challenged the terrible music scene at the time, and gave anyone with an idea the permission to stand up and do something new.
I am inspired every day by the attitude and energy they brought to the world and as a result all I want to do is challenge the status quo and change everything. Whether you loved them or hated them the influence they have had on the UK creative culture is incredible.
What are you most looking forward to about Cannes this year?
Meeting some interesting people and seeing my mum's new flat.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I'm allergic to lobster.
