Surfing is a way of connecting to nature and letting go of the city’s stresses. But what if you could find a way to integrate the luxuries of the city among the waves?

Samsung has created the Samsung Galaxy Surfboard, which connects surfers with those on-land. By transforming the board into a Galaxy S7 smartphone, the surfboard can display messages direct from Twitter.

Some may see it as distracting but Leo Burnett Tailor Made – the agency behind the initiative – assures that it has created the board so that coaches can communicate with their students from the shore while fans can help to spur surfers on.

22-year-old Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina test drove the prototype in this promo film helmed by Rafa Carvalho (below).

LED lights were fitted to the board so that messages could be viewed regardless of weather conditions and helped surfers to have more control over their surf, thanks to the wind and wave information features.

“During practice, surfers spend hours out at sea, while their coaches are on the shore. These distances are obstacles to the athletes’ evolution and motivation,” says Leo Burnett Tailor Made’s co-president Marcelo Reis when asked how they came up with the initiative.
