Digital Dance Party Rocks the Decibel Festival

For this week's Decibel Festival in Seattle, smart space design firm Stimulant partnered with Microsoft to create dBcube, a one-of-a-kind digital experience on Microsoft's Cube.

Debuting for the first time publicly at the music festival, the Cube is a unique five-sided structure built by Microsoft to showcase digital displays. Seeing the Cube as a canvas for creative composition and interactive art, Stimulant developed a custom interactive instillation that allows up to three people per side (12 in total) to interact with it for a connected dance experience that reacts to the music playing at the festival.

When people approach from opposite sides, their avatars become linked at the hands by flowing digital ribbons. As they dance and move their hands, the ribbons flow and twirl, creating beautiful patterns unique to each pair of dancers, connecting through this digital portal in a way that’s never been seen before.

The dBcube will be hosted in the EMP Museum until 28 September during the festival. This marks the second time Stimulant has partnered with the Decibel Festival, having created bespoke digital signage last year for the festival’s 10th anniversary.

This is the latest innovative work resulting from Stimulant’s long-standing partnership with Microsoft, which most recently included the development of the 520 Teleporter kiosks using Microsoft’s Photosynth technology as a part of the Seattle Space Needle’s recent digital revamp.
