Real-time Mural Brings the US Open to Life
The story of this year's US Open is brought to life in a real-time mural shaped by fans' favourite moments.
The story of the 2014 US Open is being brought to life in the form of a real-time mural in campaign created by DDB New York.
Artist Josh Cochran is completing the mural over the course of the tournament, with the final piece falling into place for the finishing day of 9 September. Each day, Cochran is creating art based on the most talked about topics and social mentions aggregated through #StoryoftheOPEN.
On-site painting is taking place every morning on one of the busiest thoroughfares in New York City – a billboard above Midtown Tunnel.
In addition to the live mural, DDB has developed a digital destination within USOpen.org that includes custom content for the mural, featuring user-generated content to inspire Cochran as well as a daily video of the mural painting. All of the video content is featured here.
A robust Facebook tab serves as the content hub for the campaign, housing a live feed of Cochran painting each morning. It also includes interviews with the artist. As the story unfolds, fans are able to view a full catalogue of the day-to-day moments within the tab, understanding their role in shaping the mural and its tale.
Fan photos and stories will inspire web content including video, photos and descriptions, further solidifying the connection between user-generated content and the artist’s interpretation. Bringing fans to the forefront, the mural gives people the chance to experience and shape this year’s US Open story.
