Remo Camerota, a director repped by Great Guns production company, proved he has many strings to his bow when he travelled to Hong Kong last month for the opening of Gromit Unleashed, an exhibition raising funds for the Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Appeal and children’s art programmes in hospitals.

The filmmaker, who is also a designer and graffiti artist, had been asked to create two sculptures for the Wallace and Gromit themed exhibition hosted by Aardman Entertainment and E Concepts. The project included 70 sculptures in total; each individually created by top designers, celebrities and international brands.

Camerota made two giant Gromits for the event under the titles Gromits Day of the Dead (which was inspired by Halloween and his love of horror movies) and Gromit in the Clouds with Monstaz (which came from the artist’s own characters, Monstaz, developed over the past five years for children’s murals).

The director told shots.net: “I have been a huge fan of Wallace and Gromit since they began. The original movie was a great inspiration to all of us directors and animators. So I thought it a great honour to be asked to collaborate with the Aardmans in getting to create my very own design of the Gromit.

“Also, it is a charity event that started in Bristol last year for the children’s hospital. When it was on in Bristol I even thought to myself that I would love to be part of this. To help children in need is a great calling and if one can help then I believe they should do everything they can.”

When asked why he thought the Wallace and Gromit characters were so popular worldwide, Camerota put it down to their attitude and loveable “Britishness”.

He explained: “I would say Wallace and Gromit being goofy Brits is a big factor. But the jolly and carefree attitude that the characters have, the wonderful British accents, all the shenanigans that they get up to and the wonderful sets and colourful landscapes that they live in is appealing to all ages. It brings out the child in all of us. And I just can’t wait for the smaller collectable versions of our Gromits to be released, later this year. I am personally honoured to be part of this Wallace and Gromit history.”
