Legendary rock band Metallica have given an icy performance to fans at an unprecedented concert in Antarctica set up in collaboration with Coke Zero.

The gig, which could be experienced through an online stream at coca-cola.tv, saw James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo played for more than an hour in a dome set close to the heliport of Argentine Carlini Base. Its spherical structure was designed to withstand powerful wind gusts and snow accumulation, conditions that commonly prevail in Antarctica, allowing the show to be conducted without problems.

The band played Enter Sandman, Master of Puppets and One from the 32-year track record in the midst of unparalleled natural scenery, in the only continent they hadn't yet visited.

“Thanks for making this great moment with us. Now you can tell your grandchildren that this was the most memorable concert of your lives”, said James Hetfield. He also stressed that “with this concert we played on all continents” and sent a message of environmental awareness inviting all to protect the region.

Some 120 participants attended the incredible show including 20 scientists from Russia, Korea, China, Poland, Chile, Brazil and Germany, and the winners of Music Zero, a competition set up by Coke Zero, enjoyed the talent of Metallica through headphones, to respect the harmony of the unique environment.

"This is amazing; being with Metallica in a concert in Antarctica, sharing a trip with them is something I have never imagined," said said Argentinean participant Paul Lojo. "The place is stunning, and to watch them play at such a setting is something I will remember all my life."
