The Young Director Award, which is supported by shots, has launched a new category called Creation in Isolation.

This year's YDA has the overarching theme of humour, and while this was announced long before the Covid-19 pandemic, the YDA believes that it is more important then ever for the industry, and the world at large, to keeping smiling.

"Finding hope, brightness and laughter during this time will help to make this period easier on all of us," says Francois Chilot, YDA President. "While there is very little to smile about on the news, we are seeing extraordinary acts of kindness between neighbours and friends, and people of all ages are finding new ways to express their creativity. Here at YDA we are thrilled to see all of the artistic creations that are being produced while in lockdown, and we want to do our bit to promote the best bits of lockdown filmmaking."

The YDA 2020, which usually takes place during the week of the Cannes Lions, has become a digital event this year, with Chilot publishing an open letter on the YDA site explaining why the annual celebration of new directing talent needs to go ahead despite the challenging situation, and the free-to-enter category is the YDA’s way of finding and promoting the best bits of filmmaking during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

"We want to see how you are keeping your creativity flowing while in isolation," continues Chilot. "Make short films using whatever you have lying around and send them to us. They’ll be judged by the YDA team and our favourites will be posted on our Instagram and on shots for the world to see. It’s open to everyone, whether you’re a young director or not, and it’s completely free to enter.

Karim Bartoletti, Partner, Executive Producer and MD of Advertising at Indiana Production, and this year's YDA jury chairman, has kicked off the Creation in Isolation category with his own short film [above], shot entirely in his home while in lockdown.

The rules of the competition are below and, once created, you just need to send your submission to the YDA team vis the YDA Entry platform.
