There are powerful parallels between the game of chess and the world of business. The strategic moves. The focus, the patience, the commitment. The constant striving to be better, aim higher.

In a new film for Nedbank Commercial Banking, its advertising agency, Joe Public, drew on these parallels to demonstrate how partnering with Nedbank can help take businesses to the next level by giving business owners the guidance, mentorship and support they need to think bigger.

Directed by Jabu Newman from Romance Films and filmed on location in and around Cape Town using a cast of local actors, this beautifully cinematic film tells the story of a young challenger to a more experienced chess player and the journey he embarks on, counselled and motivated by his older mentor, to learn the lessons of the game and the qualities it takes to succeed.

In order to ensure that the film was true to chess in every respect, a real chess master was engaged to advise on everything from the moves to the way the game progressed to how the actors handled the chess pieces.

Aspirational, premium imagery was layered with 3D hand-drawn animation to dramatise the complexity of chess and add a tactile, visceral quality that reflects the beautiful ‘messiness’ of our protagonist’s mind as he plans his next moves.

The end result is an immersive filmic experience that makes all the right moves: expressing Nedbank’s modern, dynamic approach to business banking, building in emotion, energy and intensity, and inspiring people to take their business to new heights by thinking bigger with Nedbank.
