Agency VMLY&R announced the appointment of David Shulman as chief experience officer in its rapidly growing customer experience (CX) practice in North America.

Shulman will join a global team of CX leaders who focus on the transformation of customer experience across VMLY&R’s largest global clients. Shulman will be based in New York and report to Jeff Geheb, global chief experience officer.

CX is a foundational capability within the agency’s mission of creating connected brands. It aligns strategy, experience design, commerce, technology and data to transform businesses.

Working in partnership with clients, VMLY&R’s integrated CX offering redefines the relationship between businesses and their customers through the creation and evolution of products, services and experiences. VMLY&R’s CX practice has significant partnerships with Ford, United Rentals and Pfizer. Shulman’s appointment builds on other key global hires, including Karen Boswell as chief experience officer in EMEA.

“There is enormous momentum around our CX capability, and David’s addition to the team speaks to our ambitions in this space. He brings broad experience across strategy, design and technology, which is key in our ever-evolving industry. He’s been a client, has expertise across various industries, and has lived and worked in numerous global markets. He’s successfully run and grown agencies, developing new capabilities and competing on the biggest stages in our industry,” Geheb said. “David brings a winning combination of business-building experience, a deep understanding of clients, passion and pragmatism that will accelerate our ability to deliver truly connected experiences.”

Shulman’s appointment comes at an exciting time for VMLY&R and its CX capability. “Brands have the opportunity to transform via customer experience to better serve customer needs and drive business growth,” Shulman stated. “VMLY&R is well-positioned to lead this transformation with exceptional talent, depth of expertise and an outstanding client portfolio. I’m so thrilled to join the team.”

Prior to joining VMLY&R, Shulman was CEO of Omnicom Group’s Organic, and before that he served as president at Wunderman. Earlier in his career, Shulman worked on the client side at Jaguar as brand strategy manager. Later on, he spent nearly a decade at Digitas, founding the agency’s Detroit office. Shulman has been recognized by Campaign’s “Digital 40 over 40,” which recognizes the most talented, accomplished and relevant leaders in interactive marketing.
