Obongjayar’s Try is helmed by up-and-coming director Spencer Young and produced by Hello Love.
It begins with a child lip syncing to the artist’s voice as the promo becomes a mighty message of inspiration and representation.
Throughout, the boy continues watching Obongjayar’s video on his TV screen as the lyrics “you won’t grow if you don’t sow” play. The visuals line up with the Nigerian, London-based artist’s words, conveying the underlying message of the importance of representation on screen and the impact that can have.
The video is filled with still-life portraits of the artist and the dancers in the video, wearing clothes that beautifully complement the backdrop. Moving quickly between these shots and ones that focus on dancing silhouettes, each type contrasts the other, making for very engaging visuals.
