The campaign aims to increase recognition for small businesses around the US by way of small business spotting through engagement across social media.

Small Business Spotting is a new campaign from Intuit QuickBooks, the world’s leading financial technology platform for small businesses, which is focused on bringing small businesses to the foreground of film and entertainment. The campaign will launch across QuickBooks’ owned social channels, and was produced with TBWA\Chiat\Day LA.

The goal of the campaign is to increase recognition for small businesses around the US and to see entertainment fans of all kinds share their love of storytelling with the small businesses that helped bring these stories to life. QuickBooks will launch a campaign video across the brand’s social platforms featuring small businesses from major motion pictures, including:

  • San Fernando Majers Coin Laundry: In that film about the multiverse-traveling mom.
  • Bob’s Market: In that film about fast cars and family.
  • Dinah’s: In that film about a bowler named The Dude.
  • Los Angeles Theatre: In that biopic about Hollywood's most iconic sex symbol.

The digital campaign leverages the insight of film tourism, a trend where viewers travel far and wide to visit locations from famous films and extends the awareness of small businesses into the digital sphere. Movie-goers can join in spotting small businesses from their favorite films via submitting comments on YouTube and TikTok.

When viewers watch a movie clip, trailer or piece of content on social media, QuickBooks encourages them to leave a comment on the video detailing the name and location of the small business along with the timestamp on where to find it in the video.

  • QuickBooks will track the comments and locations to create the ultimate Google Maps guide to small businesses in film and entertainment media across the US.
  • The Small Business Movie Guide map will serve as a tool for audiences to locate small businesses from film and help drive awareness and support to the physical locations, bringing the campaign full circle and bolstering resources to continue film tourism for small businesses.
  • The map will be available to access via the brand’s social media bios.

An extension of the campaign, QuickBooks is celebrating the Oscars and the small businesses that add character to the movies audiences love the most. On TikTok leading up to the Oscars, the brand’s profile will feature businesses from 2023 Oscar nominated films, including, San Fernando Majers Coin Laundry (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Los Angeles Theatre (Blonde), Monte’s Camera Shop (The Fabelmans) and the Orpheum Theatre (The Fabelmans).

The importance of small businesses in our communities is often talked about, but not always recognised. QuickBooks is committed to powering prosperity for small businesses, which includes advocating for the recognition of their efforts and contributions. In fact, a recent survey from QuickBooks states that 7 in 10 people surveyed said that small businesses owners should get more recognition. Given America’s love for movies, and the fact that most movies feature community favorite businesses, QuickBooks introduced the Small Business Spotting campaign timed with film's biggest night.
