Superlative signs director Robin Comisar
The production studio and creative collective grows it's directorial roster with the genre-bending comedy filmmaker.
The award-winning commercial production company and creative collective, Superlative, has added director Robin Comisar to its roster, a move that further strengthens its reputation for producing work on a global scale with craftsmanship and cinematic potency.
Comisar’s reel includes standout campaigns for brands such as Mucinex, Amazon, Lipton, Roku, Cumberland Farms, MGM Hotels, InnovAsian, Verizon, and, most recently, his campaign for ZIP, the credit management app, in collaboration with agency Majority, which broke in February. His work for Apple earned him a prestigious Gold Lion at Cannes in 2019.
“Comisar’s work is defined by a rare tonal balance that blends grand, often surreal comedic premises with intimate, with human moments that resonate on a deeper emotional level,” David Kwan, Managing Director, Superlative, says. The Superlative team first took notice of Comisar at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017, where Comisar's short film, Great Choice, an unsettling, darkly comedic piece about a woman trapped inside a retro Red Lobster commercial that spirals into increasingly disturbing territory, premiered.
“Robin's short film caused an insane amount of discussion on the internet, and we took notice,” Pia Clemente, Superlative Executive Producer, says. “It wasn’t just the boldness of the idea, but also the boldness of his vision. Robin is a master of tone.”
Superlative Creative Manager, Stefan Dezil adds, “Robin fits perfectly on our roster, capturing a unique tone of absurdist and thrillingly paced comedy filmmaking that we are excited to support. In such a competitive space, Robin succeeds with his infectious personality and sense of humour, which carry over into the grace he brings to working with clients and agencies. We have been told by folks from agencies how much they adore him, and that goes a long way. His films push the envelope with genre, tone, and integration of CG and animation, falling right in line with the sensibility of brands like Geico, Old Spice, Coinbase, and more.”
Horror Features In Development: Beyond his commercial work, Comisar is also emerging as a feature filmmaker and screenwriter, represented by William Morris Endeavor, he currently has two feature films in development, including The Green, a horror project produced by Scott Free Productions, the banner founded by Ridley Scott.
“I love to pair extremely odd and unique sensibilities with beautiful images,” Comisar says. “I love to bait and switch expectations and make something lovely that also resonates in an absurd way. That grabs people's attention, and it's an exciting formula for work that lands. The challenge is finding brands that are willing to make that step. Timid comedy is a recipe for no one laughing.”
