Last Wednesday, Sticker Studios had the pleasure of presenting another Women in Film event, featuring the award-winning editing and post-production house, Nomad.
Women in Film began as an initiative to increase diversity within film crews. Harleymoon Kemp, the founder of Sticker, started her career in the lighting department and noticed the lack of representation. She wanted to create a community that would help women discover talented, emerging female crew members. Along with Nomad, Sticker continues to champion diversity in the industry, and this event was no exception.
The night kicked off with Serena Rossi as she tells us how she entered the industry headfirst. Uncertain about her career path, she discovered her passion for editing early on during her first internship at a production company, where she found herself naturally drawn to working behind the scenes in the editing suites. Rossi has since worked at several post houses, including NOMAD, where she is currently employed. She has built an impressive portfolio, collaborating with major brands such as Adidas, Virgin, and Very.co.uk.
Sarah Levitt, a prominent creative director now at Revolt, shared her journey of defying industry norms. Told that partnering with another female creative would hinder her career, Levitt used this advice as motivation to push through challenges and work toward changing the industry's dynamics. She’s not only made her mark with impactful campaigns for the Princess Diana Trust and Budweiser, but also become a strong advocate for women in creative fields, especially as mothers. She believes that hiring mothers is an incredible asset, calling them "superheroes" who can balance it all.
Kharmel Cochren’s story exemplifies the "girls gotta eat" mentality. She hustled her way into the industry, starting as a casting director and taking her first job for just £50 to cast people on an estate. Her hard work paid off, and she went on to cast for BAFTA-winning projects like Saltburn, Rye Lane, and MEGAFORCE’s iconic Burberry ads. Kharmel ended the evening with an unapologetic conversation about finances in the industry, breaking the taboo around women asking for their rates upfront.
As we close out the year with this month's Women in Film, Sticker Studios want to thank once again everyone who attends the event and takes real action toward making a difference in the industry.
