The Danish Cancer Society has embarked on a unique and creative journey for its annual Sun Campaign, culminating in a vampire movie.

The director's strong connections in Eastern Europe were pivotal in this innovative decision.

Creative agency Pong and production house Holy Ravioli, along with director/partner Klaus Spendser (also Mad Cow Films) created a story about vampire Igor, who lives a boring life in his Transylvanian castle until he is summoned on a mission to Denmark. Tasked with teaching Danes about the harmful effects of sun exposure, he reminds the sun-loving public of three crucial tips: "Shade, sunhat, and sunscreen." Accompanied by his assistant Boris, Igor ventures to a park, a beach (where he stays in his coffin), and even a school where he ends up scaring the life out of the children.

“Not all clients would agree to a film about a sun-fearing vampire with an identity crisis who sets himself on fire in front of an entire pre-school class”, says Ulrik Jessen, creative director at agency Pong.

"In the Sun Campaigns, we've often used unconventional methods to emphasize sun protection to the Danish public. When Pong suggested a vampire for this message, we were captivated," says Peter Dalum, project manager at the Danish Cancer Society. "Vampires are experts at avoiding the sun's harmful UV rays, making Igor the perfect ambassador."

Director Klaus Spendser was equally enthusiastic when he saw the pitch. "I knew we could create something extraordinary," he says. "And it has been an extremely touching experience to see how people are willing to help me when the case is right. My close friends at Armada Films in Prague made sure we could even produce a film. They rolled out the big guns, and suddenly there was a full sized film crew in the Czech Republic ready to make movie magic," says Klaus Spendser.

He adds: "Combined with the most impressive forces in Denmark, we have have made a film that I could not be prouder of. When the project is right, our collective creativity shines. Or, as Igor would say, 'I'm simply 'stake-ed' with joy!'"
