new—land announce their latest directing talent, Sharif Abdel Mawla, for representation across commercials, branded content, music videos and short films.

Through a profoundly human perspective that balances tongue-in-cheek humour with political nuance, Mawla has a unique feature-film visual style. He is known for building powerful, cinematic narratives that often touch on the surreal, whilst remaining grounded in a raw and honest reality. Observational, timeless, and often toying with filmic self-awareness, Mawla brings a new dynamic to the new—land roster, marrying together cinematic craft with subtle social commentary.

“We are delighted to welcome Sharif to new—land. He first caught my eye with his film for adidas, Life Advice, as a storytelling piece, it has such energy and vibrancy. Sharif really compliments our roster at new—land, while bringing a new dimension to it; I can’t wait to see what we can make together.” said Trine Pillay, MD at new—land London.

His first feature, Casting Call, premiered this year to great acclaim. A mirror to a darker side of the film industry, Casting Call is born from the aspiring actors who would flood his DMs daily, each claiming to be “the best actor Amsterdam has ever seen”. The film portrays the uncomfortable transition from ambition to obsession.

Mawla has won awards at Cannes Lions, 1.4, and the Webby awards among others. He works with a broad variety of global brands and clients, collaborating with Google, Nowness, i-D, adidas, Pepsi, and The New Originals.

Mawla's next feature is currently in development.
