Short film Lacrimosa is written and directed by Paolo Monico, co-produced by Milan-based Movie Magic International and Monico’s NY-based Pogo Piggybackers

The cast features American actress LaRecia Hines and film star David Dastmalchian, one of the main characters in James Gunn’s upcoming The Suicide Squad.

“Lacrimosa is a love story between two corpses.” says writer-director Paolo Monico “I’ve always been haunted by true tales of people coming back to life during funerals and in mortuaries after being declared dead. I guess the idea for this film comes from that hidden fear. But I wrote the short because I wanted to explore some controversial themes like death, love, race and privilege with a different perspective. I always felt that true love could be within reach only if we get rid of all the layers and obstacles and we finally see each others’ souls. I don’t know if that’s even possible on this planet and in life. Maybe only when we are dead? And, what if in the process we find out we are not dead after all?”

“When Paolo brought his script to our attention we immediately loved it!” says Giorgio Borghi, Movie Magic’s Executive Producer and Partner “We think the stunning result is proof that advertising production companies like Movie Magic, with their expertise and professionalism, can bring high-quality narrative products to life.”

Lacrimosa is an official selection at the Oscar-qualifying Hollyshorts Film Festival in Los Angeles, and is the result of years of collaboration and friendship with an accomplished team of acclaimed professionals that Monico met on his commercial sets throughout the years. In particular, DP Paolo Caimi and production designer Gaia De Marinis, who both did a stellar job on the film, colorist Adriano Mestroni and VFX supervisor Alberto Mantini of Band Post Production in Milan and composer Guido Smider. On top of that, there’s the nuanced and delicate performance of Hines and Dastmalchian, who fell in love with the script and flew all the way from LA for the 2-day shoot.

Paolo Monico and Movie Magic are currently developing a mini-series based on this short film. They will pitch the show to a streaming service player during the second half of 2021.
