2011 Emmy Nominations Announced, Familiar Names Top Lists

Imaginary Forces produed the main title sequence for the HBO hit "Boardwalk Empire."

The 2011 Primetime Emmy Awards nominees have been announced and the list includes familiar names in such categories as Commercials and Main Title Design.

In the former category, MJZ has two TV spots nominated: "Questions" for Old Spice and Wieden + Kennedy, directed by Tom Kuntz, last year's Emmy winner for "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like," and "Baby" for McDonald's and TBWA\Chiat\Day, directed by Fredrik Bond.

Other 2011 nominees in the commercial category include Hungry Man, which was nominated for the American Express spot titled "Conan," produced for Ogilvy & Mather and directed by Bryan Buckley; RSA, which was nominated for "Baby Driver" for Subaru and Carmichael Lynch, directed by Jake Scott; Epoch Films, which was nominated for "Polar Bear" for Nissan and TBWA\Chiat\Day, directed by Daniel Kleinman; and Serial Pictures, nominated for "Born of Fire" for Chrysler and Wieden + Kennedy, directed by Samuel Bayer.

In the category of Main Title Design, Imaginary Forces racked up two nominations, for "Boardwalk Empire" on HBO and "Rubicon" on AMC.  The "Boardwalk Empire" title sequence was directed by IF's Karin Fong and Michelle Dougherty, while the "Rubicon" titles were directed by Fong.

Jake Scott of RSA directed "Baby Driver" for Subaru and Carmichael Lynch.

Also nominated for Main Title design was Elastic, which produced the opening title sequence for HBO's "Game of Thrones."  That project featured graphics from A52 and was edited by Rock Paper Scissors' Angus Wall.

This year marks the second year of multiple main title sequence nominations for IF. It was nominated last year for its work on "The Pacific" on HBO, "Nurse Jackie" on Showtime and "Human Target" on Fox. The winner in this category in 2010 was Curious Pictures, which won for HBO's "Bored to Death."

A number of editorial companies and effects houses contributed to the nominated spots and title sequences. A52, for example, provided graphics on the "Born of Fire" spot for Chrysler. Among the editors whose work was recognized in the commercials category were Chris Franklin of Big Sky for American Express; Rick Lawley of The Whitehouse for Subaru; Carlos Arias of Rock Paper Scissors for Old Spice; Steve Gandolfi of Cut + Run, L.A. for Nissan; Gavin Cutler of Mackenzie Cutler for McDonald's; and Tommy Harden of Joint for Chrysler.

The 2011 Emmy Awards will be announced on September 18 on a TV special aired in the US on Fox.
