Australian director Max Barden, signed with The Sweetshop for representation in Australia and New Zealand, has now expanded his connection with the company to cover the US market.

At just 26, the filmmaker has gained attention with his unconventional humour-infused approach to storytelling, post-production knowledge, skill for assembling the right cast and putting to use what he has to work with - all while maintaining a fun energy on set.

Barden’s journey in the film industry has been fueled by a lifelong passion for comedy filmmaking, a dream he’s nurtured since childhood. Early in his career, he engaged in a purposeful exploration of varied comedic styles, including a pivotal mentorship with renowned Bart Timmer at Czar Amsterdam. That experience, amongst others, played a key role in shaping Barden’s distinct comedic style.

Alongside commercial directing for the likes of Meadow Fresh and Vogel, Barden cultivates a solid and amusing TikTok account, specializing in fake celebrity interviews.

“Ever since I was a child and my mum asked what I wanted to do, I would say the same thing: ‘I want to direct commercials for The Sweetshop US,” Barden notes. “I look forward to crafting memorable work for the American market and aspire to not only think outside the box but to make everyone wonder whether there ever was a need for the box in the first place.”

Managing Director George Meeker describes the director’s films as “a unique blend of conceptual comedy storytelling.” He adds, “Max has a talent for replacing good ideas with great ones while preserving the integrity of the stories. Simply put, you can expect the unexpected.”
