Merman welcome the esteemed, award-winning director Mark Albiston to the roster.

Albiston has a profound talent for identifying untapped actors and capturing nuanced performances that encapsulate the fragility, tenacity and candour of the human spirit.

In the commercial world he is a celebrated storyteller, whose work spans an impressive breadth of genre and tone. From emotive narrative arcs to witty and at times absurdist comedy, Mark has directed for some of the biggest agencies and global brands such as IKEA, NatWest, Lloyds, BT, Vodafone, Apple, SKY, Thomas Cook, Lotto, Toyota and Three Mobile.

He consistently brings a touch of magic to every script in his wheelhouse and as a result, has picked up awards at Cannes, D&AD, Creative Circle, Caanz AXISm Adfest and The One Show. His charming campaign for Lipton that captures the symbiotic relationship between an introverted schoolboy and his kind-hearted bus driver tugs at the heartstrings and as a result, received widespread critical acclaim.

Albiston’s short films Run and The Six Dollar Fifty Man both won the Jury Prize at Cannes as well as Best International Short at the Sundance Film Festival and garnered many more accolades on the festival circuit. His feature film Shopping won the Grand Prix at the Berlin Film Festival.

His most recent film Datsun is a proof of concept for his feature film The Blood Moon currently in development. Datsun had its European premier at the Berlin Film Festival and its North American premiere at SXSW, before having a hugely successful festival run winning best short, best director, best actor, best cinematography at many other festivals.

Mark Albiston says; “It’s great to get the chance to  work alongside a team that’s led by such a strong creative force in Sharon Horgan, and of course working with such a good friend in Spencer Dodd. The company mirrors the interests and avenues I want to continue to explore as a filmmaker so it seems like the perfect fit.”

Spencer Dodd, EP and Partner, MERMAN says; “When the opportunity arose to sign Mark, Shiv and I  jumped at the chance obviously. Mark’s a highly skilled filmmaker and a lovely human being with a good heart. That comes across in all his work which is consistently brilliant and his profile fits in perfectly with our commercial, branded entertainment and long form ambitions. Having worked together previously over a number of years I know exactly what he’s capable of and I’m extremely excited to be reunited once again with both him and his undoubted talents. We couldn’t be happier that Mark’s a Merman.”
