Lightship, America’s first all-electric recreational vehicle company, and award-winning creative and production house Stept Studios have joined forces on the launch of the L1 travel trailer.

Lightship selected Stept Studios to develop, produce and edit a series of films in part because of their deep roots and expertise in the outdoor and adventure world, but also their experience with brands breaking new ground. Lightship's mission of reimagining the RV experience needed to be met with a team that could make their first public introduction stand out.

“Initially drawn to us for our expertise in outdoor brand campaigns, Lightship gave us an open brief, create a series of films to make a splash about the launch of the L1. As we dove deeper into the brand positioning and innovative product details, we realised the magnitude of the opportunity at hand: be the first touchpoint for the general public about this industry-disrupting product,” shares Claire Sommer, Stept Brand EP, and adds “It was the perfect marriage of everything that excites us; impact-driven product innovation, technology, and the great outdoors.”

Stept’s creative team was inspired to dream big about how Lightship would first show up in the world. They were inspired by one simple line that set their wheels in motion, Lightship is Here. Both an invitation as it is a call to action, to explore and take you where you want to go, and beyond. This grounded the development as they created films featuring the L1, about their mission, and co-founders Ben Parker and Toby Kraus’s vision for this new travel experience.

Stept brought in director Benoit Lalande to achieve the blend of nostalgia with newness and wonder, in the birthplace of the brand, the ever-explorable Northern California. Stept enlisted Lockt Editorial to work in tandem with Stept’s creative team to incorporate the nuanced details of the core creative concept; ultimately paving the road for a sustainable messaging platform as the L1 rolls out. Already a finalist for the SXSW Design Innovation Award, the creative needed to stand up to the product.

“We built the L1 to reimagine the RV experience for those who love to explore our planet while not harming it. Working with Stept Studios on these films, we feel that we found a team that were inspired by our mission and were great partners in bringing the L1 to life beside us,” said Toby Kraus.

The Lightship L1 films will be debuting in person at SXSW March 11-13 in Austin, TX alongside the L1 Alpha prototype, and sunset sessions with musicians each night.
