greatguns' newly signed director Klaus Thymann has won the Sony World Photography Award in the category Professional Fashion and Beauty Photographer of the Year.
A fashion story set amid Iceland's glacial landscapes has earned Danish-born, London-based photographer, Klaus Thymann one of the most prestigious awards in the photographic industry. The Sony World Photography Awards, organized by the World Photography Organization, drew 122,000 submissions from 170 countries. The jury was chaired by Catherine Mayerhoff, Director of Special Projects at Magnum Photos and made up of photography experts from across the world.
The shoot, for legendary British fashion title i-D, follows an adventurer as he explores a series of remote glaciers around Iceland. In a departure from elaborate, heavily stage-managed fashion stories, it was shot entirely with available light, amid natural surrounding with no sets or props.
Thymann is one of the world's leading fashion and advertising photographers and directors. In 1996, he became the youngest winner of the Scandinavian Kodak Gold Award. Currently he is a contributor to publications including i-D, the New York Times, Wired and V. Thymann has photographed advertising campaigns for Nike, Levi's and Nokia, amongst others. He has directed short films, music promos and exhibited moving image pieces and his work appears in numerous solo exhibitions and group shows. He is also the founder of Project Pressure, a not-for-profit initiative documenting the world's retreating glaciers.
Thymann's winning photographs, alongside other images from the awards will be on show at Somerset House in London from 26 April to 12 May and published in the 2013 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book.
