Heads of Production Get a Look at Shooting Spots in 3D

SourceEcreative sponsored the Heads of Production meeting on June 9 at the new offices of Grey in New York City, hosted by the agency’s Bennett McCarroll.   The topic was shooting TV spots in 3D, and once again our resident 3D experts, Vincent Geraghty of Leo Burnett, Executive Producer on the agency’s 3D campaign for Samsung, and Ed Ulbrich, President of the Commercials Division of Digital Domain, were on hand to share their experiences working in the format. Both talked about issues for shooting and posting in stereoscopic 3D that involved timelines, workflow, approval processes for clients and budgets.  Other aspects that were discussed included the available pool of experienced 3D production and post talent, the  current lack of standards for 3D production and broadcast, the use of preferred or regular lists of production and post vendors and suppliers, the importance of factoring in audio and sound design and the limitations of the technology in terms of shooting, editing and pacing. Ulbrich pointed out that VFX studios such as his are increasingly being called on to consult on 3D jobs, while Geraghty pointed out that there are currently no post houses in Chicago capable of displaying 3D content. Also discussed was the potential for BlueRay releases of new entertainment product, as well as an infusion of videogame titles, to help drive the sale of 3D TV sets.  Geraghty and Ulbrich took part on SourceEcreative’s panel discussion the following day at the DGA Theater (for more on the event, click here), co-sponsored by parent company DG Fastchannel, that discussed the impact of 3D broadcasts from programmers like ESPN and what it means for advertisers, agencies and producers.
