Cate Tomlinson unveils Half Lover music video
New work from The Corner Shop director Luigi Calabrese for Cate Tomlinson.
Creating a music video that adheres to 80s slasher genre conventions was a challenging yet dream-come-true project for The Corner Shop Director Luigi Calabrese, a lifelong fan of John Carpenter.
The opportunity to emulate the style of his childhood film hero in a music video was exhilarating.
Music Videos are typically high-energy, the genre demands slower pacing and atmospheric build-up. The key was to identify pivotal moments and integrate them into a dynamic performance video, bookending it with scenes that captured the essence of those classic films while maintaining a sense of levity.
Capturing the correct era tone was crucial, aiming for a "cheesy 80s slasher" feel to keep it light-hearted and balanced. Additionally, shooting on 16mm film was essential to achieve an authentic look and really give the audience that home-viewing feeling of the era as if they had picked up a VHS at their local blockbuster.
