Bait Society has released Le Messager, a forty-five second film written, directed and produced in-house as a tribute to the Stella Artois advertising of the 2000s, the period-cinema commercials that treated a short format like a piece of filmmaking and asked audiences to sit inside a story.

Set on the French front in 1917, Le Messager follows a young runner and the officer who sends him out. It was shot in firelit chiaroscuro on a 2.39:1 anamorphic frame, and built the way those films were built, on restraint, on light, and on performances held a beat longer than an advertisement usually allows.

The film is an independent, self-initiated work. It is not a commissioned campaign, and it is not affiliated with, authorised by, or produced for Stella Artois or AB InBev. Bait Society made it to test the question that runs through all of its work: how much of that older craft an AI-led film can carry today.

"The films we grew up on treated thirty or forty-five seconds as real cinema. We wanted to see whether the tools we work with now could hold that same patience, the same light, the same trust in a face. Le Messager is our answer, made entirely on our own terms," said Kobayashi, founder and director of Bait Society.
