New York-based creative VFX shop Artjail has opened an office in Canada.
Located on Sterling Road in Toronto’s Lower Junction neighbourhood, the new office marks the company's first venture outside New York.
“Having our feet firmly planted in New York while opening up in Toronto helps us remain nimble and stay focused on the work,” says Artjail founder Steve Mottershead [pictured above, centre]. “We have a keen awareness of how to balance talent, culture, workload, and overhead to deliver projects that both Artjail and its clients are truly proud of.
Mottershead, originally from Toronto, says he chose the city as the first point of expansion partly because it feels like home, but, more importantly, because things came together to make it a sound strategic step. “Toronto has increasingly been drawing more attention as a global hub for creative work and we see a great opportunity to be a part of that movement,” he adds. “Things aligned both culturally and on the talent front to make this happen.”
That talent includes two partners - Andres Kirejew (formerly of AXYZ, Township, Alter Ego), who joins Mottershead as partner/head of 2D, and Gene Dreitser (formerly of Spin, Loki, Digital Domain, Mr. X, Alter Ego) as partner/head of 3D. The rest of the Toronto team includes executive producer Greg Benedetto (formerly of Jam3) and colourist Clinton Homuth.
With a reel that includes OK GO’s multiple award-winning The One Moment and the Oscar-nominated documentary Cutie and the Boxer the company is currently in production on spots for Toyota, adidas and Sprite.
