On My Radar: Aisling White
Ahead of this year's Kinsale Shark Awards and Festival, which starts tomorrow, Aisling White, the festival's director, discusses what's on her cultural and creative radar.
What’s the best ad campaign you’ve seen recently?
HSE I Will Survive, from BBDO Dublin. Those clever advertising people used an iconic song to really encourage folk to give up cigarettes. It really resonated with me.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
News site IrishTimes.com. Always consumed on the Luas on the way to work, otherwise I get too engrossed in my day and have no idea what is going on the rest of the time.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
A Macbook. Thanks to this little gray mass of metal, I’ve been transported into the 21st century, which has been both deeply cathartic and refreshing at the same time.
What’s your favoured social media platform?
Twitter. Essential daily activity for the latest biz news headlines, and for spying on Flumpy the Trumpy. So entertaining and addictive. So bad it’s good.
What’s your favourite app on your phone?
Myfitnesspal. I’m passionate about clean eating, so I like to know what I’m eating, the nutrition it contains, and it helps to prevent me over doing it on the naughty stuff.
What’s your favourite TV show and why?
The Bridge. My perfect night in to kick back and relax is to be scared half to death and ending up peeking from behind the sofa to watch the end. I’m aware this is quite possibly masochistic behaviour.
What film do you think everyone should have seen and why?
Erin Brockovich. Like many working mothers the world over, I juggled a career with bringing up children, and this movie empowered and inspired me. Anything is possible if you work hard enough.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
Paphos, on a fitness bootcamp. Inspiring trip.
What’s the most significant change you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
I guess the most obvious is the digital transformation, no surprises there. There have been so many changes, the landscape is constantly shifting, there are almost no boundaries, everyone is doing everything! The words ‘adapt or die’ swim around in my head
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
Tom McGowan, Unilever marketing director for Ireland bellowed at me once: “Just get on and do it, be courageous and go with your gut instinct”. I have never forgotten it, thankfully. It’s damn good advice to have bellowed at you. I’m also terrified that if I don’t obey, he might hunt me down and make me pay.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know
I love sending and receiving cards. I’m on first name terms with the lady on the till at Clintons.
