22squared and Priority Create Innovative Bike - Inspired By a Car

With the recent push to be physically active and environmentally friendly, more and more people have been incorporating cycling into their daily routines, whether it is a means of transport or as a part of a workout. However, with more bikes on the road, accidents involving bicycles happen on a daily baisis and result in around 1000 deaths per year.  

This is why 22squared has teamed up with Priority Bicycles to create a safer prototype for a bicycle that is equipped with some of the latest in safey technology used in the 2018 Toyota Camry. The new bike has over 500 feet of cable running through it, as well as an array of sensors to alert the cyclist of potentially dangerous objects close by via a colored display mount on the handlebars. The prototype also features headlights that tilt depending on the speed of the bike, lights on the sides and back to alert drivers of the bike's presence, and a fully-powered car horn - the exact one used in the Camry.

The goal was to create a bike that is both safe and not distracting to riders or drivers. And although this bike may not be mass-produced in the near future, it brings to light many issues surrounding the dangers of sharing the road and, as the campaign hopes, will inititate a dialogue about how to address these issues via technology, legislation, and infrastructure. 

“Think of this prototype bike much like you would a concept car. It’s 'what if' thinking by three incredibly innovative companies imagining a better, safer world for motorists and cyclists," says 22squared's executive creative director Kevin Botfield. "Our intent was to build something tangible together that showcases Toyota’s commitment to safety and raises awareness for an alarming problem out there within the biking community. And while we might not see a bike like this on the road just yet, we would like to change the way people view safety on the roads.”
