Pantene has teamed up with Grey New York to rewrite some of the wrongs of the beauty industry with a campaign video that focuses on strong, beautiful, African American hair.
With All Strong Hair is Beautiful Hair, produced by Townhouse and directed by Khalil Joseph, the brand announce their Gold Series, hair care products intended for what Pantene call 'the unique hair needs of African American women'.
In the advert itself, the hair of these women is shown in all its variety, from a vintage Pam Grier-esque 'fro to artistic, avant-garde contemporary straight styles and everything in between, including representations of relaxed, natural and trasitoning styles.
'There is still a level of inequality in how African American hair is represented in popular culture,' said a spokesperson for P&G, 'mass brands, like Pantene, have inadvertently been part of the problem of this pervasive hair bias with a history of advertising showcasing a limited representation of African American hair styles and textures'.
