Virtual reality is the perfect tool to instil compassion in others; as it offers a first-person POV and allows wearers to explore something they may not otherwise be exposed to. Which is why it’s the perfect storytelling medium for charities.

VR developers Showstorm thought the same, which is why they’ve released a new VR competition – vr4charity – which offers free VR and AR for charitable organisations.

The competition was a no-brainer really. “[VR] is emerging as a powerful and immersive storytelling device that charities can really embrace to achieve the maximum social impact," says showstorms’s MD, Mark Bellinger.

All charities have to do is enter in their ideas and suggest ways in which vr4charity the technology could help them.

Of the brief, Bellinger says, "Their project could be an immersive experience that will help translate their cause, it could be for training to help volunteers. It doesn't even have to be 360° video; in VR and AR anything is possible, we want charities to get creative and really challenge us!"

A budget of £30k is up for grabs as well as expert help from Showstorm’s team to help bring the ideas to life.

The competition was inspired by previous VR charity campaigns, such as Alzheimer’s Research UK’s A Walk Through Dementia through Visyon (below) and The National Autistic Society’s 360 video Can You Make It To The End? from Don’t Panic.

Winners will be announced in June 2017 so get your entries in ASAP. Click here to email your idea or tweet it to @showstorm using the #VR4Charity hashtag.
