Droga5 have launched a new 360-degree VR experience that replicates London as it was during the 1952 Great Smog.

In the practically-titled The Rustlers 2017, 360°, 1952 VR Experience, directed by Christos Mavrides, a cheery tour guide takes the VR user through some of London’s most famous sights, including St Paul’s Cathedral, Big Ben and HMS Belfast. However, none of the sights can be seen, with everything covered with a thick grey smog except a pair of feet you can just about make out if you look downwards.

The VR experience is inspired by a real event the ‘Great Smog’ of 1952 in which London was engulfed in thick fumes from coal emissions, and an estimated 4000 people died as a result of the pollution.

Although a VR experience where you can’t actually see anything may sound like a one-note joke, the technology behind it is fairly advances, with the sounds using a ‘binaural 360 reactionary soundbed’, which plays sounds to the right and left ears separately to create a feeling of a three dimensional environment.

According to a press release, the aim of this VR experience is ‘to show the youth of today just how good they really have it in comparison to their predecessors. Because instead of ingesting dangerous smog, today they can have flame grilled burger in 90 seconds instead’ from Rustlers. What a world we live in…
