On My Radar: Andy Bird
Publicis' CCO on cultivating his son's talents, constantly getting lost & criticizing online comment sections.
What website(s) do you use most regularly and why?
BBC.co.uk, because it’s usually real news, not opinion. nufc.com, to keep up with the worst soccer team in the universe.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought and why?
Microsoft Surface Pro 4 for my son. He’s a budding artist and the Surface Pro tech is incredible. Broke the stranglehold of Apple in chez Bird.
Facebook, Instagram or Twitter?
Twitter, if only to follow Trump-ton.
What’s your favourite app on your phone and why?
NYC Subway. I’m still only a year in the city and constantly getting lost and mixing up my R’s 6’s and D’s.
What’s your favourite TV show and why?
Hannity on Fox News. Keep thy enemy close. And it’s hysterical, isn’t it?
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
Dead Man’s Shoes.
Where were you when inspiration last struck?
Probably asleep.
What’s the most significant changes you’ve witnessed in the industry since you started working in it?
Then: Photographers shot on film. Art directors could draw.
Now: Nobody walks around with the top buttons on their shirt done up anymore. People are sober in the afternoon. Cannes Lions is the answer to everything.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
We’re still a long way off diversity, especially in creative departments. I believe and hope that will be rectified in the near future. The way we work has to change for that to happen.
I really wish people were fairer on industry sites' comments sections. It’s nice to be nice.
What or who has most influenced your career and why?
John Hegarty. Gave me a chance, and was the best boss I’ve ever had.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I’m related to no-one famous.
