What's the best promo you’ve seen recently and why?

I really liked Tyrone Lebon video for Frank Ocean - Nikes, it was fresh and interesting, and looked great.

What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?

I still remember it to this day, it was Michael Jackson's Thriller. I watched it with my Mam and my brothers and I was completely blown away. As soon as it was over, I got my mother's makeup and tried to make myself into a zombie.

And what’s your all-time favourite music video?

I think Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of my favourites. Again, the first time I saw it, I was blown away because the song was such a game changer. But it was those punk rock cheerleaders that really got me!

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

I am and always have been a massive fan of Spielberg, that's the stuff I grew up watching and still has a lot of resonance with me, especially his early stuff. It's the way he mixes popular culture with something bigger; there's always a societal question. And visually, they are just sublime.

What are you listening to at the moment?

At the moment I'm listing to a lot of punk rock, a lot of 80s American Hard Core and rediscovering a lot of the many great U.K. anarco punk bands. Been listening to a lot of Minor Threat — Oh and Christmas carols!

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

I'm not massively into tech and try to keep stuff in camera, although I have been trying to do more effects lately and working with effects artistts has been really interesting.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

I would love to do something with L.A. noise core band Health. I also heard Minor Threat are making a new album, I'd kill to make a music video with those guys. Or some of the new Grime artists, like Skepta or Stormzy (below).

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?

It seems harder to get stuff made. Labels are taking less risks and paying less money.

What’s your favourite Christmas Song/Promo?

Dean Martin's Let it Snow (below) and Promo The Pogues' A Fairy Tail Of New York - it's not Christmas without them!

Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?

I think that's down to the passion of directors pulling out all the stops to get them made, unless labels start putting in budgets I don't know where it will go. Hopefully they realise the merits, I mean there are budgets for the bigger pop stuff but that's not where you're going to get to experiment. But the future does look bright; there are always new directors looking to make amazing stuff and it's their energy and passion that have brought about that resurgence.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…

When I was 15 I had a Hard Core Punk band called Genital Mishap... I was the front man!
