As the winter months creep in, the days get shorter and the evenings become increasingly colder. But worst of it all, surely, is the lack of light.

For not only does that impact on the number of accidents that take place in rural areas, where public lighting is limited, but it also makes pedestrians afraid of walking around after dark.

UK insurance company Direct Line has created a prototype piece of technology together with Saatchi & Saatchi that promises a solution to those most affected by this problem.

In a supporting spot that demonstrates what the Fleetlights app can do, a fleet of flying drones can be sent out to the app’s users to pick them up and light their journey.

Pedestrians, bikers and vehicle drivers can request this service – as the drones respond to movement and can keep up with different speeds.

Tested in the English town of Petworth in West Sussex, the spot focusses on various users who test out the system – with one woman using Fleetlights after a late work shift and a man using it to assist him and his rescue team, when they're called out on unfamiliar roads.

As the woman on the video comments, “[The lights act as] a source of comfort and safety.”

Watch the BTS below video to find out exactly what inspired the video and why Petworth was the ideal neighbourhood to test out the technology.

The project currently operates as an open source project, which means that any communities that want to test it out should get in touch directly with Direct Line. For more information on Fleetlights, click here to explore its designated website.
