Macmillan Cancer Support has released the latest instalment of its VCCP campaign, ‘No one should face cancer alone’, which follows a man living with cancer, tracking his journey from diagnosis to post-treatment recovery and highlighting the support Macmillan offers at each stage.

Breaking last night during ITV’s Coronation Street, the impactful film uses the simple device of having characters helping the cancer victim voice lyrics from Gerry and The Pacemakers' 1963 anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone. Simple but effective, the idea repurposes the emotional core of a song that could be cheesy or maudlin if employed differently. It was directed by Nicholas Jack Davies of Pulse Films.

The campaign was originally due to launch in early May but was postponed until after the Hillsborough inquest verdict out of respect for the families affected.

Michael Sugden, CEO of VCCP said: “Macmillan’s latest campaign reminds us of the incredible network of support they offer to those living with cancer, which extends far beyond the tireless work of the Macmillan nurses."

The fully integrated, national campaign also features OOH, social activity and a partnership with Smooth Radio that will feature real people living with cancer sharing how Macmillan has supported them and their loved ones.
