It’s not often that agencies get to create short films, but Ogilvy has broken the mould with a short film, Lifeline, for mobile tech company Qualcomm.

Serving as more of a branded content film than a campaign, the 30-minute-long film is a psychological thriller featuring an all-star cast including American actress Olivia Munn and Chinese singer/actor Leehom Wang, best known as China’s Justin Bieber.

The spot, set in Shanghai, promotes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 mobile processor, which offers increased performance, longer battery life and improved speed among other capabilities.

Protagonist Wang uses the new processor to help him find his girlfriend (Munn), who is unexpectedly missing when he awakes one morning.

Helmed by Armando Bo, who wrote Birdman, the short is filmed in Mandarin with English subtitles and serves as a way to introduce Qualcomm’s technology to China. Read more about the initiative here.

And you can delve deeper into the plot with a BTS episode, Inside Lifeline, with commentary from Bo who explains how they integrated the phone’s capabilities into the storyline:
