With only three more sleeps left until the Big Day, there’s only one person on everybody’s mind… and that’s Santa.

Whether you’ve been good or bad this year, come Christmas Eve – regardless of how Scrooge-like you may currently feel – you’re guaranteed to be overcome with excitement for the festive season.

Especially as Aardman Animations has teamed up with Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) team to create a short interactive film following Father Christmas and his special, annual midnight delivery.

Helmed by director Tim Ruffle, the spot (below) is the first in Google ATAP’s Spotlight Stories series which will be featured on YouTube.

Special Delivery sees a caretaker accidentally chase Father Christmas around a block of residential flats, although he cannot keep up with Mr Claus’ sly behaviour.

Viewers can watch the story using their smartphone or Google Cardboard headset and explore it further by moving the handset to unlock various features. Ten subplots can be found and various sensors throughout the story will activate a series of mini-stories about the neighbours.

“In these 360-degree, interactive stories, your phone becomes a window to a world all around you,” says Google ATAP technical project lead Rachid El Guerrab.

This method of filmmaking places the action in the viewer’s hands and gives them a sense of control over what they are seeing.

Look out for more Google Spotlight Stories due to be released in the New Year.
